The South Chapter of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) stole the show in Atlantic City on March 10th and 11th. Several members were successful in placing at the event.
The organization is open to freshman, sophomore, juniors, and seniors and sent a large delegation to the state championships after a strong run at regionals.
Future Business Leaders of America is designed to offer a more in-depth look at how to outshine others in your career path and teach new tricks and legal advice to young business-oriented high school students.
Toms River South sent 17 members to Harrah’s Resort in Atlantic City. The whole statewide tournament was within the complex and the attendees stayed for two days, arriving Wednesday night and departing Friday afternoon.
At the meet-up there were seminars focusing on niche business tips and the latest thinking behind building up the American economy.
More entertaining shows at night, such as a hypnotist, brought some smiles and laughter into the event.
The last day competitors from various categories were ranked to move on to the National FBLA Competition this June in Chicago.
Placing in the Top 10 for TRHSS were:
Madeline Cummings, Jimmy Brierley and his partner Ryan McNeary, Margaret Horn, Riddhi Jariwala and her sister Siddhi Jariwala, Sophia Citta, and Grace Rhine
Advancing to Chicago:
1st place winners Jimmy Brierley and his partner Ryan McNeary and 4th place winner Madeline Cummings

This is what the amazing students and advisor, Mr. Gold, had to say:
Jimmy: “I had an excellent experience at the FBLA leadership conference. It was great to network with so many wonderful people and get even closer with some of South’s students. I’m sure my partner Ryan McNeary will agree that our win in the business plan event was very unexpected. However, after our presentation we felt fairly confident that our proposal was received well. After that, the rest is history. Our plan detailed a clothing company manufacturing products from recycled textiles. I got a lot out of this trip because I got to talk about sustainability and environmentally friendly business practices with teachers and advisors from other schools.”
Ryan: “It was a great experience and I’m so glad that I took the opportunity to join FBLA and go on this trip. Going there and winning was one of the craziest experiences I’ve ever experienced and I believe more people should take this opportunity to show what they have by joining FBLA. Winning it all was honestly shocking but I was very thankful because of the time and effort put into the project and I am looking forward to nationals in June.”
Maddy: “This year has been a longtime coming for our club. Margaret Horn, Emma Grunin, and I remember our first year of the SLC as freshmen and if you told us then that we would be sending not one, but three people to nationals this year, I don’t think we would have believed that. FBLA has been a part of my life for 4 years now and now all that hardwork has paid off in my senior year. Our club has nearly doubled in size and I hope it grows even more (sorry Mr. Gold) and we can keep bringing pride to Toms River and the Business Academy. The message I want to leave the underclassmen in FBLA with is this: keep working, keep making progress, and keep encouraging your peers to do so as well. I will have no doubt in my mind that you will see results if you take this advice and I will be your biggest cheerleader.”
Mr. Gold: “I will say that the students performed amazingly during the FBLA State Leadership conference in their various business related events. I am extremely proud of the hard work and success that all of the students had throughout the event and am especially excited for Maddy, Jimmy, and Ryan, as this was a huge accomplishment for them. In my years of FBLA, they are my first qualifiers for nations and I can’t be happier for them.”
I love writing these types of articles because there are so many successful and academically excellent students at TRHSS. So, once again, congratulations to South’s FBLA!!!
