If you ever walk into A18 you will see the art teacher Mrs Ruhlin’s plant obsession and in some rare cautions, you might even walk in on her petting her plants, just to show them how much she loves them.
It all started when she moved into her own place and although she wasn't able to recall her first ever plant, she does recall the first plant she got for her classroom. Jason is a Zz plant and is about 6 years old and sitting at home in Mrs. Ruhlins desk area. She loved Jason so much that sometimes she would give loved ones their own Zz plants. Along with Jason, Mrs. Ruhlin has a Monstera plant named Ron. Ron is the biggest plant in her room. And she's had him for about three years now.
Ruhlin gave us her 3 secrets to plant parenthood, ready for it ? WINDOWS! Yes windows, if you enter her room you will see rays of sunshine reflecting upon each other. Along with the windows, she recommends to name them. To quote Ruhlin herself “That way they know you love them and they’ll grow and be happy”. And last but not least, temperature. Make sure that your temperature is well regulated. Her plants are set in the perfect spot; In front of the windows right underneath the heater. The perfect temperature all year round.
But the inspiration to the madness of her classroom is none other than a fellow Toms River District art teacher, Mr. Cesears. He used to teach at TRIN. His room was filled with plants. Yes more than Ruhlin herself. So much so that Ruhlin thought to herself, “Where do his students even sit?”. So Mr. Cesears, if you’re reading this Mrs Ruhlin would like to thank you.
Even though plant parenthood seems hard, Mrs Ruhlin believes that anyone can do it. As long as you have faith in yourself and the plants. So if you have any plant related questions you know that we at South have our very own plant expert.
