Teacher Spotlight: Mrs. Gannon

Curren Thumm and Brady Barnes

As students at high school south, we feel that it is important to highlight new teachers coming into our school. We started with Spanish teacher Mrs. Gannon. Mrs. Gannon has already been a part of the Toms River Regional Schools family for a while now, working at High School North for 16 years. We sat down with her and asked a couple of questions involving different aspects of our school and herself:

How are you liking High School South compared to North?

“It has been a little bit of an adjustment, but I do absolutely love the staff and students so far. I must admit, it was nice to have a room to myself and I have been missing my old students and colleagues, but overall everything has gone smoothly. I'm happy to be here and the spirit here is like nothing I've seen.

What brought you into teaching and is it what you expected it to be like?

“When I was younger I had originally wanted to be a translator, but the job market was extremely competitive and I wasn’t able to find a job in that field. I wanted to work with people and make a difference, and I realized that I could do these things as a teacher. At first, it was a lot harder than expected, but I eventually got used to this new challenge. Teaching students is very fulfilling to me, and I'm incredibly grateful for all of the relationships teaching has brought me.

Who was your biggest inspiration growing up?

“I would definitely have to say my mother. She was someone who was 100 percent self made, strong, hardworking, and most importantly, she did everything for her children”

What are some of your passions?

“I love being with my family and I'm interested in watching soccer and baseball. I would definitely have to say that I'm a really big Yankees fan.”

Is there anything in particular that you're looking forward to this year?

“Im looking forward to feeling like I belong here at High School South. I mean I kind of already feel that way since all of the students and staff have been so kind and spirited. I also hope that students try to do their best and do all of their work.”

What makes your style of teaching unique?

“I try to approach teaching in a way that makes it personal to the students. I also think that it's important to integrate language into different cultures. Students should also learn that there are tons of similarities between English and Spanish, and I want to show them these similarities so that they are able to learn Spanish more efficiently. Organization is also a very important part of my teaching style and I believe that it has very positive effects.”

Are there any concluding remarks you have for High School South students and staff?

“Thank you for making me feel like part of the tribe from so early on.”
