Going downtown for lunch is a tradition that has been engrained in the culture here at High School South for generations. There are so many wonderful restaurants and cafes that help create this lively atmosphere that only students that go here would ever understand. With so many different dining options, we’ve felt it was necessary to really experience everything that downtown has to offer. We started with Tommy Boys, located at 216 Main Street. A cafe known for their tropical aesthetic and dog-friendly policy. Now, let’s see if Tommy Boys is Cedar Berry approved! Here are each of our perspectives:

“When we arrived at Tommy Boys, I couldn’t help but notice its pleasant and endearing look. It had a nice little front patio for eating outside and many people were typing away on their laptops. On the inside, there were many paintings and photos that embraced the Jersey Shore, which I thought was pretty cool. They had many unique benches and seating arrangements that were fairly spread out, so you didn’t have to worry about feeling cramped. It was very pretty looking and radiated this warm energy. The music was relatively quiet and definitely added to the aesthetic they were going for. The student menu was very affordable, especially the breakfast menu which was priced at $3.00. The lunch menu was only a little higher at $5.00. The one problem with Tommy Boys was their variety in food. If you wanted to get something off the student menu you really only had two choices, the breakfast sandwich special of the day or the wrap special of the day. Also, unlike other restaurants downtown, beverages were not included. So that definitely added to the price a little more. I decided to go with the Chicken Caprese Wrap, which was the Wednesday special. As a cafe, I knew that their main draw was definitely their caffeinated beverages. With this in mind, I ordered a Caramel Latte as well. My final order came out to around $9.50. The service was first-class and the lady who took our orders was extremely friendly and helped us out a lot. The wait for our food wasn’t super long. It’s definitely not the fastest place Downtown, but not the slowest. When we got our food, my first thought was how good it looked. It tasted even better. The chicken’s flavor just melted in your mouth and the sauce was stellar. Once you finished, you didn’t feel the slightest bit bloated. I actually felt healthy eating this meal. The latte stood out to me the most. The caramel flavoring was very well balanced. It wasn’t too sweet or too flavorless. It was the perfect beverage to wash down my wrap with. To sum everything up, Tommy Boys is definitely one of the more quality cafes that downtown has to offer. If you aren’t a picky eater and looking for an all-around great experience, Tommy Boys is the place for you.”

“If you attend Toms River High School South, Tommy Boys is a must when eating in Downtown Toms River during your lunch period. The cafe itself has a whole different feel than any of the contending restaurants in town. The service is quick, so ordering is a fast-paced process. The food is always hot (or cold depending on the food) and ready, and affordable given the stupendous student deals during the school week. One item that stood out to me above the rest of their pallet was the bacon egg and cheese sandwich. The sandwich was fixed and neat, avoiding any possibility of a mess, the bread was just the right mixture of fluff and stiffness, and each individual ingredient was superb. Tommy Boys’ menu has a wide variety of sandwiches, not just breakfast, to satisfy your hunger no matter your mood or time of day. To complement your meal, Tommy Boys supplies a variety of bottled beverages, as well as lemonade and various coffee.”

“Tommy Boys is an excellent place for students to spend their lunch. This tropically themed cafe not only accommodates humans, but also welcomes dogs inside making the overall environment more upbeat. I would say that Tommy Boys has the best options for healthy eating out of any of the Downtown lunch options offering daily wraps, breakfast sandwiches, and coffee. Although the wraps seem a bit petite for the full five dollar price, the delicious breakfast sandwiches make up for it, only costing three dollars. The overall aesthetic of Tommy Boys was enjoyable; with good music, comfortable seating, and cool decor.”
